Kilbrittain is a peaceful, picturesque village nestled in a
sheltered valley, inland from Harbour View Causeway on the Wild Atlantic Way.
The name Kilbrittain comes from the Gaelic “Cill Briotáin” meaning
“Britton’s Church”. The village is renowned for its many historical
sites including Castles, Churches, Mass Rocks and a Holy Well.
Kilbrittain Castle is both breath-taking and imposing, it is the oldest inhabited castle in Ireland, dating from 1035AD. Built by the grandson of Brian Boru, it was once the principal seat of the MacCarthyReagh Clan.
Kilbrittain and its hinterland has a great choice of outdoor pursuits on it’s doorstep. The beach areas of Harbour View and Coolmain are ideal locations for swimming, boating, kite-surfing and sail orientated sports. The area is also a mecca for nature enthusiasts who enjoy woodland walks, horse riding, bird watching and fishing.
The Village Park features the dramatic 18 metre skeleton of a Fin Whale.. who chose our Bay as his final resting place some years ago. The playground here suits every age group, with adult exercise equipment, a picnic area and car parking. It’s the starting point for a variety of looped walks… Discover its beauty when you take the gentle Slí na Sláinte walk, the Coilte woodland walk or one of the varied country road walks (brochure available).
Why not do something different and try West Cork Secret Activity Centre or the Maze Trail (seasonal).Kilbrittain’s August Festival provides fun activities for all.
It’s a truly inviting rural setting with distinctive hidden gems…
